The flags of Illinois Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery
regiments were carried by Illinois soldiers through the most famous
battles of the Civil War. At the end of the War the majority of
the flags were returned to the State and are now in Memorial Hall
(Hall of Flags) in the Howlett building in Springfield. The flags
carried by the men were called regimental flags, national flags,
standards and guidons. This web site displays photos of these Illinois
colors by branch of service and regiment and includes additional
information about Civil War flags in general and the history of
individual Illinois flags where known.
Also included in this site are Confederate flags
captured by Illinois soldiers.
Read about what has been done and what needs to be done
to preserve the historical treasures.
