Civil War Flags

14th  Illinois  Infantry  National  Flag

Description

This flag has a recangular canton with the stars arranged in 6 horizontal rows. The stars and unit designation on the center stripe are gold. This flag was probably produced by Gilbert and Hubbard of Chicago. The battle honors are difficult to read but do include the following: 14th REGT ILL VOL, SHIELOH (sp?), SIEGE OF CORINTH, MATAMORA (sp?), SIEGE OF VICKSBURG, JACKSON, CHAMPION HILLS, ATLANTA, Savannah, Sallketchie (sp?), COLUMBIA, FAYETTEVILLE, CHERAW, BENTENVILLE (sp?). The various lettering in the battle honors suggests that the lettering was added at different times by different individuals. After the Grand Review in Washington this Regiment, along with the 15th Illinois Infantry was transported to St. Louis, then to Fort Leavenworth, Ks, then marched to Fort Kearney. It served on the plains in the Indian Wars until Sept 18, 1865 when it was mustered out at Fort Leavenworth.
