According to the Adjutant General Report of the State of Illinois, Vol III, the Washburne Lead Mine Regiment was organized and commissioned in northwestern Illinois in July, 1861. It rendezvoused at the JoDaviess county fair grounds, near Galena, and the camp was named Camp Washburne, after E. B. Washburne a member of Congress from the Galena district.
