73rd  Illinois  Infantry  National  Flag

Description

Inscriptions which can be read are: PERRYVILLE, 73d ILLs INFy VOLs, STONE RIVER, CHICKAMAUGA, MISSION RIDGE, DANDRIDGE, ROCKY FACE, ADAIRSVILLE, DALLAS, LOST MT, KENESAW MT, ATLANTA, JONESBORO. At the twenty-third reunion of the Seventy-third Infantry, the “Survivors” discussed a flag that the Regiment had carried. “Here followed a discussion of the “Old Flag”, and among others was Comrade J. O. Joy, who said that the first flag used as a regimental flag was a beautiful silk flag presented by the Loyal Ladies of Loami. He stated that that flag was now in the country near Loami and the custodian is W. G. Miller of Company I. The white stripes have disappeared but the red is pretty well intact and the stars are in good shape. It had been well cared for, he said, and kept well covered except on Memorial Sunday and Decoration Day, when it was unfurled, although it would be shown to anyone who cared to go to see it, and he wished that the comrades would go and see it again. …He said there were inscriptions on it as to the battles it had been in.” This may be the flag referred to since the white stripes are missing, the flag is home made and there are battle inscriptions.
